good morning, america. breaking overnight, new killing on a college campus. three shot, one fatally at a christian college in seattle. the shooter armed with a shotgun and a knife. >> we have a suspect who's down and needs medical attention. >> student heros to the rescue. this hall monitor using pepper spray to bring down the suspect as he tries to reload. severe weather in the south. at least three dead. heavy flooding sweeps cars away. powerful winds throw this atv into a wall. and watch this scene as a pickup truck is struck by lightning right in the middle of the road. right now, president obama in normandy, honoring our world war ii veterans on this 70th anniversary of d-day. as tensions with russian president vladimir putin run high, their paths crossing this morning in a high-profile encounter.

starting with yet another school shooting. this one at seattle pacific university, where student heroes came to the rescue with a dramatic takedown of the shooter. neal karlinsky has all of the latest from seattle. good morning, neal. >> reporter: george, good morning. police say the gunman walked through that door over there and opened fire when he got inside, just as students were taking their final exams. >> we have a suspect who is down and needs medical attention. >> reporter: chaos on a college campus. >> a halo of shotgun shells. >> reporter: it was just before 3:30 in the afternoon, when police say 26-year-old aaron ybarra hall at seattle pacific university and opened fire with a shotgun. this student's friend was hit. >> i got one text message from him. he just said, i got shot. and i texted him five or six times. but i got no response after that. >> reporter: students, huddled in locked classrooms. one stood guard inside with a pipe in his hand. >> we thought it was an experiment at first.

but then we heard screaming. >> reporter: out in the building's lobby, police say ybarra fired on three students. but when he stopped to reload, witnesses say a student building monitor, seen here, risked his own life. pepper spraying the suspect, and jumping on him. >> he has a fiancee. he has a lot to live for and he just acted quick. >> reporter: other students joined in and held ybarra down until police arrived. his gun seen here on the ground. >> my first reaction was one of heartbreak that a senseless act of this nature could occur on this campus. >> reporter: while he was down on the ground, chris howard tried to help a woman who was shot, cradling her head in his lap. >> she was basically just panicking. call my mom. call my aunt. call my best friend. i need you to make these calls for me. i think i'm going to die. >> reporter: a man in his 20s was killed. two other victims, a man and a woman in their 20s are hospitalized with shotgun

wounds. as for ybarra. >> seattle police with a search warrant, open the door. >> reporter: abc news was there when police stormed his parents' home late thursday night. authorities say he is not a student at psu. his connection to the school, unknown at this time. this could have been so much worse if not for that brave student who leapt into action, armed with only pepper spray. as for the suspect, there is still no known motive. he has been booked on investigation of homicide. there is still no known motive for this. george, lara. >> thank you so much. we turn to the deadly storms sweeping through the south, including flooding and powerful winds that have left a path of destruction. abc's steve osunsami has the story. >> there's a huge funnel cloud. come here. >> reporter: this morning, severe weather in the south, responsible for at least three deaths and miles of destruction. >> it looks like something from vietnam came here and just blew the place up again. >> reporter: several dangerous storms swept east over parts of tennessee, arkansas and georgia thursday. in tennessee, heavy flooding led to at least one death. rescue teams still searching for

a 6-year-old autistic boy outside nashville. the car he was in, swept away by floodwaters. >> we are in a rescue mode right now. we're all praying we find this little boy. >> reporter: the other five people in the car, including three children, were able to get out alive. >> right now, that's all we have, is each other. we're hoping to find him safe and sound. >> reporter: and in arkansas, strong winds lifted 15 to 20 cars off these train tracks and knocked this airplane at jonesboro airport. and winds so strong, they slammed a four-wheeler into the side of this house. downed trees claimed two lives in arkansas. one teacher in blackrock and a 74-year-old retired police officer in jonesboro, who died after a tree fell on his house. >> everybody was crying and everything. >> reporter: neighbors say they could hear his screams. here in atlanta, there was an amazing sight as the storms passed through. the skies turned purple. and for much of the city, you could see a purple rainbow. people were running outside to

grab pictures of it. the storms were ending just at the exact moment that the sun was setting. george. >> that is an absolutely stunning picture. thank you, steve. we're going to turn to president obama in normandy this morning for the 70th anniversary of d-day. a historic moment that's also made for tense diplomacy with russian president vladimir putin over the crisis in ukraine. jon karl is in normandy right now. good morning, jon. >> reporter: there's no formal meeting on the schedule. but president obama and president putin have already had one brief conversation today and likely to run into each other one more time. both here in norman day to pay homage to those who sacrificed so much 70 years ago today. a moment to remember. heroes of d-day, gathered this morning on the bluffs above omaha beach, where 70 years ago they fought one of the most important battles of all-time. and today received a rousing tribute from the president. >> these men waged war so we might know peace. they sacrificed so that we might

be free. they fought in hopes of a day when we no longer need to fight. >> reporter: most of the d-day heroes are in their 90s. for many, it will be the last time they hear the world pay tribute to their sacrifice. more americans died here on the shores of normandy in 24 hours than in the 10 years of war in afghanistan. >> whenever the world makes you cynical, stop and think of these men. >> reporter: when general eisenhower ordered the d-day invasion, he said there was no plan "b." everything on the line. more than 150,000 troops taking part in the invasion of normandy, the largest amphibious assault in the history of mankind. connecting past to present, also here, some of the heros of the post-9/11 generation. including army ranger cory remsburg, who captured america's attention earlier this year when the president paid tribute to

him in the state of the union address. >> sergeant first class cory remsburg never gives up and he does not quit. >> reporter: he first met him in nar man di just before he was severely injured in afghanistan. >> the first words cory said to me after his accident, echoed the words first shouted on this beach, rangers, lead the way. >> reporter: poouten and obama ran into each other at a luncheon for the leaders here for the d-day celebration. they did have a one-on-one conversation, and we're told it lasted five to ten minutes. >> meantime, jon, the president continues to be dogged by the bergdahl controversy. >> reporter: that's right. he's faced questions here on the road. and he said most recently that he is not making any apologies about this. he said, i saw an opportunity. and i seized it. and for that, i make no apology. >> we'll have the latest on that, sunday on "this week." let's go to amy with the other top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with word overnight that a u.s. citizen has been detained in north korea. the tourist identified as

jeffrey edward foley, was taken into custody, reportedly, because he left a bible at a hotel. he is the third american being held in north korea, including missionary kenneth bae, who was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. and moments ago, doctors at the u.s. military hospital in germany reported that army sergeant bowe bergdahl is showing improvement. they say he's becoming more engaged in his treatment as he recovers from five years in captivity. the taliban claims it treated bergdahl well. giving him food he requested. and even letting him play soccer. also breaking overnight, the man dressed in military camoufla camouflage, accused of gunning down three police officers and forcing the lockdown of an entire city in canada has been taken into custody. he has been arrested in a woman's backyard. abc's ron claiborne is there with the latest. ron? >> reporter: the end came dramatically. police officers arresting

24-year-old justin bourque in the middle of the night. >> my parents saw them make a formation. and then start screaming, come out with your hands up. and about five minutes later, he surrendered from out behind one of the trees and said, i'm done. >> reporter: new brunswick police tweeting, residents of north moncton can leave their homes. since wednesday night, moncton, a city of 69,000, had been a virtual ghost town. residents hiding in their homes behind locked doors, as police staged a massive manhunt for bourque, after he allegedly shot and killed three officers. on his facebook page, bourque frequently posted photos from anti-gun control groups and lyrics from heavy metal bands. quoting the group megadeath late wednesday afternoon, a little with a big eraser changing history. what is still not known, what allegedly triggered his deadly rampage. this city was paralyzed with fear. nothing open. virtually no one on the street. amy, this morning there is enormous relief here. >> that is good news, indeed. ron claiborne, thank you. and bank of america is in talks with the government to pay

$12 billion in fines for the shoddy mortgages leading up to the financial crisis. 5 billion would help owners reduce their payments and repair vacant properties. dramatic video overseas this morning, when this swordfight broke out between rival groups at a temple in northern india. the holiest site in the sikh region. it started when a politician tried to make a speech. eight people were injured. and the ultimate caught on camera moment. look at this. a truck is driving down a highway in canada when it's suddenly struck by lightning. look at that. a fireball melting part of the truck, trapping the couple inside. thankfully a police officer was nearby and helped rescue them. the lightning took out the electrical system and filled the cabin with smoke. can you imagine? >> wow. >> they say it sounded like a sonic boom, it was so incredibly intense. thank goodness they're okay this morning. >> it looks like it was hit by a drone. >> yeah. >> amazing.

>> just mother nature. >> thank you. we're going to turn, now, to the high-profile weight loss business in beverly hills facing a new legal fight this morning, after its offices were raided by federal agents. abc has covered complaints about the company's 1-800-get-thin programs in the past. and brian ross is back now with the latest developments. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, george. federal agents are stepping up their investigation of, as you say, one of the most high-profile and controversial weight loss businesses in the country. a place where at least five patients died after lap-band surgery. in the high profit business of weight loss, few doctors have made more money than these two beverly hills brothers, julian and michael omidi. with their business success and celebrity social life, they ended up on the cable tv program called "dr. 90210." now, they're under investigation, as founders of the widely advertised 1-800-get-thin weight loss business. as first reported by "the los angeles times," their offices and their mother's home was

raided by federal agents thursday as part of an investigation by the fbi, irs and the fda for potential health care fraud, money laundering and other federal crimes. the once ever-present advertising offered an easy one-hour way to lose weight, with a lap-band procedure to constrict the stomach. >> i tried every diet out there. the lap-band was the easiest thing i have ever done. >> reporter: done right, the lap-band procedure is a safe technique. but relatives of five patients who died after surgery at the brothers' clinics in los angeles, say they were the victims of substandard care and negligent doctors. >> is she breathing? >> no. >> reporter: paula rogeski died on the operating table. laura suffered a lacerated liver. >> they're making this seem so easy, so easy. >> reporter: dr. omidi, brian ross. the brothers who ran the business but did not operate on patients would to the talk with

us when we first reported on them two years ago. but their lawyers say there are always great risks in dealing with obese patients. and that their clinics are professionally accredited and meet the highest standards. in testimony, one doctor who worked at the clinic said he was told by one of the brothers not to worry about any lawsuits over patient deaths, because they're making so much money, they could easily afford any judgment against them. the brothers called that doctor a liar. this is an ongoing important case. >> brian, thanks. >> a lot of questions there. turning now, though, to game one of the nba finals. and the heat, the big story last night. no, not the team. they lost. but when the air conditioning went out at the san antonio spurs arena, fans wilted, as the game turned into one hot mess. abc's ryan owens has the story. >> reporter: game one of the nba finals was all about the heat. not the miami heat, led by lebron james. but the san antonio heat, that turned the at&t center into a hot mess. after the air conditioning just

quit. >> i feel like pouring a bucket of water on my head. >> reporter: the temperature on the floor, 89 degrees. players dripping with sweat. icing themselves down during breaks. fans fanning themselves with just about anything they could find. all that heat was just too much for the heat's lebron james, who cramped up in the fourth quarter, and had to be carried off the floor, literally. they're trying to smoke us out of here, lebron said to his team. the temperature did not seem to bother the san antonio spurs. they took charge, beating miami, 110-95. they now lead the series, 1-0. >> i don't know what happened to lebron. but i think all of us were feeling the heat. >> it was warm. >> felt like i was playing in a european championship. we never have a.c. in europe. >> if you play basketball, you play basketball where it's hot, like this. i'm sure it would be a lot better on sunday. >> reporter: the folks here at the arena are apologizing for

"gma" investigates, secondary drowning. the numbers are growing of people affected. and he is the most famous horse in the world. there he is. this morning, possible triple crown winner, california chrome, on the track, getting ready. we're going to speak to his owner and his trainer. they're going to take a quick break right here on "gma." >> what a great story he is. right now, we're going to begin with the murder trial of the former university of north carolina football player, who pushed a man out of a bar into a moving car. he claims the death was an accident, that he was defending the girlfriend, who is now his wife. and she took the stand on thursday. mara schiavocampo has all of the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the prosecution has rested their case. and now, the defense is up. they say the former student athlete did what any boyfriend would do. he was protecting her from an

aggressive et and threatening drunk. it's the case of a bar brawl gone bad. former university of north carolina football player, kenan gay, is on trial for second-degree murder, after pushing robert kingston to his death into traffic after he allegedly made a pass at his girlfriend. the woman at the center of it all is speaking to jurors for the first time. saying kingston harassed and groped her the night of his death. and that gay was simply defending her. the hairs on the back of my neck just stood straight up, she said. elizabeth gay broke down several times recounting the story. but prosecutors say her tears were for a different reason. you're crying because your husband's on trial for murder, aren't you? earlier this week, gay's defense team tried to have the second-degree murder charge thrown out. >> the state has not shomalice.

they had to show a depraved state of mind on the part of keenan. >> reporter: but the judge denied the request, leaving the jury to decide if it was all a mistake. or murder. >> oh, my god. i just ran over somebody. >> reporter: according to police reports, kingston's blood alcohol was nearly four-times the legal limit. witnesses say gay seemed stunned after he pushed kingston into an oncoming car. but that he also fled the scene and had to be chased down. >> a blonde, tall guy about 6'3", 6'4", carolina blue shirt. >> reporter: he will take the stand, most likely next week. a former law student, now turned defendant. gay has pleaded not guilty to the charges. if convicted, his sentence could range from probation to 20 years in prison. very interesting case here. >> mara, thank you. >> thank you. now, to the shocking find inside a target store. a loaded gun sit right in the

toy aisle. and police are trying, now, to figure out who put it there and why. abc's matt gutman has the story. >> reporter: there, among the pistol-packing action figures, was a real, steel, 9 millimeter lugar pistol, with a full capacity of eight rounds. >> very concerning, a loaded gun inside a children's section of a store, where any number of kids could have grabbed that and fired that gun off is very alarming. >> reporter: the gun was discovered when a security guard saw the gun in plain view, on a marvel superhero playskool box. at first, he thought it, too, was a toy. police released a picture of this man, who they say may be connected. according to the police report, he had been pacing around the toy aisle, although, the footage does not show him placing the gun there. >> it's the first of its type that i can think of in my 27

>> i called his pediatrician. she said, you need to take ronan to the e.r. right now. >> reporter: e.r. doctors said he had fluid in his lungs and was experiencing secondary drowning, a condition that doctors say is uncommon but can be fatal. >> it can take up to 24 hours to develop symptoms. most people, if they're going to have a significant event, develop symptoms in four to eight hours. >> reporter: in secondary drowning, like ronan experienced, the fluid that remains in the lungs, prevents the tiny air sacks from taking oxygen out of the air and moving it to the blood. breathing becomes harder and harder. if not caught in time, decreased oxygen can cause the heart to stop. >> it takes a small amount of fluid to cause damage to the lungs. in the child, it can be as little as a quarter of a can of soda. >> reporter: ronan survived after a fright ing 24-hour stay in the hospital. lindsay took to her blog to warn other parents about the dangers of secondary drowning. even if the child has only been

case? >> once they had the evidence. and she's not denying she did it right? they had to move forward. because there's no way to distinguish this from other cases, where in this case, she was just running in for a few minutes. as opposed to this case, it was 12 minutes. you have to draw a line. and i would also say, the fact she just got a slap on the wrist is also the right thing to do. >> exactly. >> prosecutors did the right thing, i think, by moving forward. they had to. and they were also right to say, we just want this to go away. she does community service. even in the article, she talked about how meaningful she found the community service to be. >> it shows the parent, when they're in that stressful situation, you have to take yourself out of the moment. >> i have a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old. and i get it. we need the parents to know, number one, when you're in that situation, you need to be able to say to your child, look, i know you're not going to like this. but it's not a choice. you have to come with me. and number two, ask for help when you need it. there's been times i left the doctor's office and gone to the
